The Tonawanda City School District has received $500,000 in state funding to help enhance facilities for both students and the broader community.
Announced by Assemblyman Bill Conrad alongside Superintendent Tim Oldenburg, the funding is supporting upgrades at the Middle/High School campus, including the restoration of outdoor tennis courts, addition of a pickleball court and ongoing renovations to the school auditorium.

One major project included resurfacing six outdoor tennis courts on the Fletcher Street campus. The improvements restored the courts to optimal playing condition while also creating a dedicated pickleball court. As one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, pickleball will now be available for student instruction during physical education classes and will also be offered to community members during designated public-use hours.

The funding is also helping modernize the district auditorium, a space used by students across all grade levels and by many community organizations. Upgrades include new sound and lighting systems featuring modern technology and more energy-efficient equipment, creating an improved experience for school performances, concerts, presentations and community events.

“These improvements will not only serve the kids of Tonawanda, giving them a fun new sport to try and enhancing their work in the performing arts, they will also offer benefits to the greater community,” Assemblyman Conrad said. “I’m always happy to help advocate in Albany for our local schools and residents, especially when doing so eases the financial burden on district taxpayers."
Superintendent Tim Oldenburg expressed appreciation for the partnership between the district and Assemblyman Conrad.
“School districts face significant financial strain as costs continue to outpace the limited revenue sources afforded to public education,” Oldenburg said. “Assemblyman Conrad listens, understands and takes action that becomes part of the solution.”
Director of Physical Education, Health and Athletics Jared Northrup said the enhanced tennis and pickleball courts will create new opportunities for students, athletes and community members to enjoy the sport.
The projects reflect a shared commitment to investing in facilities that strengthen educational opportunities, expand community access and enhance the experiences available to students both in the classroom and beyond.
