meet the pack night

The Tonawanda City School District recently hosted their annual Open House event as a themed evening named “Meet the Pack Night”.  This effort was to further engage students and parents in a welcoming and supportive environment.

Students and parents came together Wednesday night to connect with teachers and staff, walk the buildings, drop off school supplies, explore the various programs and resources available, and get an overview of what students would be learning in their classes. Parents were able to ask questions and gain a better understanding of how their children would be supported throughout the year.

The evening gave families a chance to reduce the anxiety that comes with the start of a new school year.  Students began using their locker combinations to gain access to their lockers, followed their schedules to gain a full understanding of their travel between classes, and met teachers for the first time.  All of these activities are often the most anxious concerns of students when they enter school for the first day.

"Returning to school can be a stressful time for both students and families," said Sarah Infante, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction. "Our goal with 'Meet the Pack Night' was to provide a welcoming space where families could learn more about what their children would experience in school this year, helping them feel more confident and excited."

Each school reported near-full attendance and said that families left ready for the year ahead.

“It was more than a success. This was the best Open House turnout we have ever had,” said Rob Ross, Tonawanda Elementary School Principal. “Families walked away informed, happy and students had their first day jitters knocked out.”

"Meet the Pack Night" was part of the district’s broader effort to build a sense of community, where students, parents and staff feel connected and supported. The district encouraged all families to attend, ensuring the school year started with a sense of unity and shared excitement.

Parents told teachers and administrators that they really appreciated having all the schools open in one night, allowing them to walk between the schools with each of their children, making the event feel more like a casual, family event.

“From a teacher's perspective, it was tremendously successful. It was well-attended, and students seemed excited to go through their schedules and show their families where their classrooms were,” said Tonawanda Middle School Teacher, Kim Jachlewski.

Jachlewski said she also noticed families seemed more at ease, allowing for casual connections and the chance to meet extended family and siblings.

“It really just had a Tonawanda community feel,” said Kristine Strible, TMS Principal.
