A bicycle safety event will be offered from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, June 2, in the Tonawanda Elementary School Auditorium

The wellbeing of students and families will be at the forefront of the upcoming “Gear Up For Safety” bicycle safety.

The event, scheduled for 6-8 p.m. on Monday, June 2, in the auditorium of Tonawanda Elementary School, 555 Fletcher St., is presented by City of Tonawanda Mayor John L. White and the City of Tonawanda Police Department in partnership with the Tonawanda City School District.

Free bicycle helmets will be provided to attendees of the event while supplies last.

The event comes as the improving spring weather inspires more cyclists to start riding, and a number of bicycle safety incidents in recent weeks in the community.

“We want to make certain that operators of bicycles, e-bikes, e-scooters are operating them safely, but also within the rules and regulations of New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law,” said Tonawanda Police Chief Robert Clontz. “There’s a reason they were put in place, and that’s to keep people safe.”

Mayor John L. White said the event would be beneficial for cyclists of all ages, especially for those who have not been cycling in recent years.

“There’s so many things we need to reeducate our adults on,” he said. “Things are a little different than they were in the past and we need to show people the risks that are out there.”
